Jersey students are being invited to take part in Listen Up! – a public speaking competition organised by Walkers (Jersey) LLP.
The winner of the competition – open to students in Years 12 and 13 at any Jersey school – will receive a £200 cash prize and the opportunity to deliver their speech at a public International Women’s Day event being hosted by Walkers next month: A celebration of liberation through the generations.
The event theme ties in with this year’s 75th anniversary of the island’s liberation from Nazi occupation, and Walkers want to include younger voices amidst speakers from a legal background, financial services, the media and government.
The brief for the Listen Up! competition is as follows:
Students are invited to create a 2-4 minute vlog answering the question: “What does liberation mean to you?”
In answering this question, the vlog may explore any topic important to the applicant. The vlog will be evaluated for:
- interpretation of brief
- creativity
- presentation skills; and
- enthusiasm.
A shortlist of applicants will be invited to present their speech to a panel, and shortlisted applicants will also be invited to attend the IWD event.
Partner Alexandra Corner, part of the Walkers organising committee for the IWD event, said: “We look forward to hearing what young people have to say on this subject to explore different perspectives on themes of liberation and equality.
“Our industry is a good example of the kind of change we are talking about – although Jersey law goes back centuries, it was not until 1968 that Anita Regal became the first female Advocate of the Royal Court.
“We are really excited to hear and see what Jersey students might come up with and look forward to learning more about how our young people see the world.”
