The Victor Hugo Centre and The Victor Hugo in Guernsey Society are encouraging islanders who worked as cast and crew, featured as an extra or remember watching the 1975 filming of The Story of Adèle H to get in touch.
The Victor Hugo Centre and The Victor Hugo in Guernsey Society plan to capture the stories in a short film of those who remember the historic event when Guernsey became the setting for a film distributed around the world. The new short film will premiere before a special screening of The Story of Adèle H, with video participants invited to attend.
The call comes as part of a celebratory event planned for the 50-year anniversary of Francois Truffaut’s acclaimed film in September.
Based on the diaries of Victor Hugo’s daughter Adèle, the film that tells the story of her obsessive and unrequited love for a British Army lieutenant.

Larry Malcic, Chair of the Victor Hugo Centre said: “Isabelle Adjani, who was only 19 years old during the filming, received much critical acclaim for her performance as Adèle and was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actress in a Leading Role.”
Dinah Bott (main picture), Chair of The Victor Hugo in Guernsey Society, added: “The film won multiple other international awards and is thought to be the only Oscar nominated film ever shot in Guernsey. Yet, beyond the accolades and the reels of footage, lies a wealth of untold stories and memories from the people who were there – on the set, behind the scenes or simply watching as history unfolded.”
