The Wetwheels Jersey True Grit Challenge returned for another year, bigger and tougher than ever, with team, solo and youth challengers raising nearly £11,000 for the charity.
True Grit is an annual event organised by Wetwheels Jersey, held over a fun but challenging course at Ronez Quarry on the Island’s north coast. Each year staff at Ronez, working with Wetwheels and 3D Events, lay out a slightly different course, so teams that have taken part in previous years will always find a new challenge. The 2023 event was sponsored again by Ravenscroft.
Every year the organisers make the course more testing, including an energy sapping ‘muddy lake’ to wade through, but all this year’s participants were up for the challenge, with one enjoying it so much he went round twice!
A younger generation between school years 6 and 11 was allowed to take part for the first time and they tackled their specially constructed course with enthusiasm. The new age class was such a success there are plans to lower the limit to those in Year 4 in 2024.
Dina Rogan, Operations Director of Wetwheels Jersey said: “True Grit is now firmly established on the Island’s events calendar and each year we are attracting more competitors, including the addition of the younger category. While we want to welcome as many people as possible, we obviously have to make sure it’s safe for all, so places are limited and if anyone wants to sign up for 2024, I’d urge them to get their forms in!”
Haydn Taylor, managing director of Ravenscroft in Jersey, said: “True Grit is a unique event and it was clear from the smiles on everyone’s faces as they crossed the finish line just how much they enjoyed it. Ravenscroft has supported the event since it began and it definitely gets better each year so hopefully by opening entries early, more people can get involved and raise money for a worthy charity.”
Applications for next year’s event on Sunday 28th April are open. Fees have been frozen until 31st December 2023.
Ms Rogan said she wanted to thank sponsors Ravenscroft Group, Seapower Marine and Ronez, Ashbe Construction and Barette Plant Hire for their help with the course and 3D Events for bringing it all together.
