Jersey’s Parish of Trinity has received a commemorative plaque after winning last year’s Scenic Lanes Competition for Rue de l’Épine.

The plaque was presented by Société Jersiaise President Stuart Fell to Philip Le Sueur, recognising the parish’s care and management of one of Jersey’s rural lanes.

Judges highlighted the lane’s strong sense of enclosure and atmosphere, with stone walls, earth banks, ferns and a stream running alongside. They also noted the balance between landscape, wildlife and traditional features.

The judging panel included representatives from the Environment Department Jersey, National Trust for Jersey, Société Jersiaise and Rotary Club de la Manche.

Particular attention was given to the management of trees, hedges and banques, including mature oaks, as well as the absence of chemical herbicides, supporting biodiversity. During the visit, judges noted birdsong and wildlife including a chiffchaff, speckled wood butterfly, bees and a range of wildflowers.

Entries are now open for this year’s Scenic Lanes Competition, which will take place on Wednesday 27 May.

SJ President Stuart Fell said: “Our rural lanes are a defining part of Jersey’s heritage. The care shown by parishes like Trinity demonstrates how thoughtful management protects biodiversity and ensures these special places endure for future generations.”
