49 employees at Standard Chartered in Jersey took to the beaches over the course of September as part of a series of initiatives aimed at keeping Jersey’s coastline clean.
The volunteers all took part in a series of beach cleans across three of the Island’s beaches at Ouaisné, La Pulente and Long Beach, removing litter from the beaches and enhancing Jersey’s coastline.
Each beach clean filled several bags of non-biodegradable waste, with the total amount of rubbish collected and removed from the beaches totalling around 60kg.
The volunteer days form part of Standard Chartered’s Global Employee Volunteering Programme which actively encourages colleagues to take part in charitable activities that help their communities to thrive. The Bank gives colleagues three days of paid volunteering leave each year, knowing that volunteering not only benefits the communities where it operates but it is also rewarding for colleagues themselves.
Building on previous years when the Bank supported local charity beach clean initiatives around the island, this year’s beach cleans provided an opportunity to support the local community and make a tangible difference through volunteering outside of the participants’ day-to-day roles.
Commenting on the beach cleans, Henry Baye, CEO, Standard Chartered Jersey, said: “This year marks 20 years of employee volunteering at Standard Chartered and volunteering initiatives such as these reflect the values we aspire to as a Bank. They provide an opportunity to support our community, strengthen our connections with one another and make a tangible difference outside of our day-to-day roles – in this case in keeping our beautiful beaches clean.
“We have a fantastic track record for volunteering locally – last year, around three-quarters of our colleagues in Jersey participated in volunteering, which is a fantastic reflection of our commitment to community engagement. I would like to extend a big thank you to my colleagues for organising and supporting our beach clean series again this year and for making it such a success.”
