The launch of the 2018 Jersey Construction Awards took place at Highlands College on Tuesday 24 April.
Presentations by Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, gave an overview on the current state of the industry and its importance to the economy of the Island and also by Matthew Poole from Camerons who was the successful recipient of the 2017 Star of the Future Award who explained how entering and winning this award and how this has enhanced his career progression.
Andy Fleet, Vice-Chairman of the 2018 JeCC Awards announced that the JeCC were delighted to announce that Sir Geoff Hurst MBE will be the guest speaker at the gala dinner to be held at the Hotel de France on Saturday 13 October.
Andy Fleet said: “Sir Geoff a 1966 World Cup Winner will no doubt be able to give us his analysis of the 2018 England World Cup squad and England’s achievements during the 2018 World Cup in Russia in June.”
The awards, now in their fourteenth year, are seen as one of the most prestigious awards events in the social calendar. Following the success of the 2017 Awards, the JeCC will once again be looking for nominations in a variety of categories that include small businesses, individual achievements, innovative processes and projects ranging from anything under £1m to larger projects of over £5m.
As a large proportion of the construction industry being made up by small businesses and sub-contractors, the JeCC will be encouraging as many entries within this category as possible.
With a significant amount of construction taking place within the Island at the present time, the JeCC will also be looking to recognise a business who has embraced sustainability and innovative processes either on a project or within their own workplace.
Another popular award is that of Lifetime Achiever and the awards will once again recognise an individual who has made a significant contribution to the industry during their career.
Marc Burton, Chairman of the 2018 awards sub-committee said “The JeCC continues to engage with small businesses and sub-contractors and we would welcome as many entries as possible from these businesses to recognise their input to a growing industry within the Island.
At a time when our industry is experiencing growth, the annual awards are an excellent time to recognise a vast array of achievements”.
This year’s judging panel will include Graeme Smith, CEO of Jersey Business, who will continue as Chairman. He will be supported by Professor Ed Sallis OBE, Mike Liston OBE, Kirstyne O’Brien, Director HSI and this year they will be joined by Sarah Gordon, Senior Building Control Surveyor, who have all agreed to join the panel and who will bring their own expertise to the judging process.
Closing date for Nominations is Friday 25 May and all information about the awards can be found on the JeCC website, www.jerseyconstruction.org
