Shopping UnLtd, the community-led transport service that helps disabled and elderly Islanders with their weekly grocery shopping, is teaming up with the Guernsey Retail Group.
Launching on 4th November, Purple Tuesday, the international day of the disabled consumer, the local charity will offer two trips into St Peter Port to coincide with the popular late night shopping evenings on 4th and 11th December. The service will fetch shoppers from their homes, transfer them to Town at a designated time and place and collect them at the end of the evening.
Tim Feak, the charity’s Development Manager, confirmed: “Purple Tuesday is a global movement dedicated to improving the customer experience for disabled
people. It highlights the power of the Purple Pound – an estimated £274 billion spent by disabled folk and their families in the UK alone each year. Yet many retailers miss out on this vital market due to accessibility barriers.
“Christmas Shopping UnLtd aims to change that. This initiative ensures that Islanders can experience the joy of giving this holiday season – choosing gifts for
carers, friends or grandchildren with dignity and independence.”
The minibus trips will operate on 4 and 11 December, arriving in Market Square at 5:30 p.m. and leaving at 8:00 p.m.
Jonathan Creasey, the Guernsey Retail Group’s Chair, commented: “Late night shopping has become a much-loved fixture in the Island’s calendar so it’s great to
see this initiative from Shopping Ltd. It makes the experience more inclusive and accessible, allowing everyone to enjoy the wonderful festive atmosphere throughout St Peter Port. The GRG is absolutely behind this.
“We are really grateful to the St Peter Port Constables for their support and cooperation in this matter. Both trips will be staffed by our team of volunteer drivers and passenger assistants, ensuring a safe, supportive and joyful experience.”
