Sark will open its border to the other Bailiwick islands of Guernsey, Herm and Alderney as of 1 June.
The decision was made in response to Covid-19 ‘being brought under control within these small islands.’ However, visitors from outside of the Bailiwick are still not permitted to visit.
‘We ask our wonderful visitors from our sister island Jersey, the UK, France and elsewhere around the world to bear with us and as soon as the rules change we will let you know and welcome you to Sark,’ said a statement on the island’s Facebook page.
‘Until then dear friends, we will keep in touch through our social media channels and our website.’
News of the island’s reopening came soon after the announcement by Guernsey’s government that the island is entering phase four of its lockdown strategy. As a result, non-essential travel outside of the Bailiwick is now permitted, though travellers must self-isolate for 14 days on return. Self -isolation will not be necessary on return from Sark.
The island and its ferry operator, Sark Shipping, will ensure social distancing is maintained and all harbour staff will wear gloves, and carters will wear gloves and only handle the suitcases. Hand luggage will need to be handled personally by the owner and no-one else.
Passenger numbers on the tractor bus up Harbour Hill will be restricted and horse carriages and bicycles will need to be booked in advance to ensure there is adequate social distancing between non-households. Pubs will remain closed at this stage.
