EY has donated £1,000 to Guernsey’s domestic abuse charity, Safer, and has committed to supporting the charity as part of a long-term relationship.

Safer support and empower those who are experiencing domestic abuse in Guernsey. Over the past 12 months alone, Safer have rebranded and launched their new website and has also been working to educate young people about healthy relationships and have joined the Your Best Friend campaign, which aims to empower all 13-24 year old girls, young women and non-binary people with knowledge and confidence to help their friends.

Aside from the initial donation, EY will be hosting an event to raise further awareness of the work Safer are doing to safeguard vulnerable members of the community, which is taking place at Les Cotils on 20th September at 12.30pm. Safer will also be providing a taster of the training sessions they are able to provide employers, which provide guidance on how to support someone experiencing domestic abuse and information about the types of support available and how to encourage someone to seek Safer’s services.

Naomi Wood, Head of Services at Safer, said: “The Refuge continues to be extremely busy and clients utilising all our services continues to grow year on year. Whilst we do receive some States Funding, we do rely on fund raising and the generosity of those businesses within the Community who look to help those in need.

“The money kindly donated by EY will be put towards purchasing security equipment such as window alarms, door wedges, personal alarms and door braces for our clients who remain at home. We are very grateful for the ongoing support that EY are giving to Safer.”

Jo Bold, Assurance Director at EY, said: “On average 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men will have experienced domestic abuse in their lifetime. Given these numbers, we are all likely to know someone affected by domestic abuse, both in our personal lives and in the workplace. Raising awareness of domestic abuse and the support available in the workplace and the wider community will enable those affected by domestic violence to seek the help they need.

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to support all the invaluable work Safer are doing to protect the vulnerable members of our community. The workplace can often be considered a safe place for those affected by abuse at home, which is why it is so important for all employers to create a supportive environment with access to professional help and awareness of the support Safer can provide.”
