The Sure Guernsey Marathon is only a matter of weeks away and hundreds of runners are preparing themselves for the starting gun to go off on Sunday 14 April.
Participants from the Channel Islands, Europe and beyond will be gathering at the marathon village early on Sunday to warm up for the three events taking place – the full marathon course, the Mourant Relay Race and The Mile.
There are three different distances to choose from this year, varying from the full 26.2-mile marathon, 4 to 13 miles in the Mourant Relay Race depending on team size or one mile in the Marathon Mile race, which is perfect for people wanting to challenge themselves to a shorter distance while still getting involved in the excitement.
Sure is once again the headline sponsor, providing all the technology and equipment for runners to improve the accuracy of their race times and give all participants an unforgettable marathon experience.
A Race Result timing decoder uses mats on the road to detect chips in the runners’ bibs, and then uploads the runners’ places to an online portal. Mats will be at the start, halfway mark, South Esplanade and the finish line. 4G SIM cards are in these timing devices which connect to Sure’s high-speed mobile network, offering a system that is more exact than ‘by eye’ methods.
Sure Head of Consumer, Mike Fawkner-Corbett, said: “Sport is core to the fabric of community in Guernsey, and makes up a key part of so many people’s day to day lives. The Sure Guernsey Marathon gives islanders, no matter their level of running experience, a chance to challenge themselves and feel a well-deserved sense of achievement at the end.
“We’re proud to be supporting two remarkable charities through our sponsorship of the marathon – the Premature Baby Foundation and Bowel Cancer Guernsey – which both support the lives of islanders and families in the Bailiwick every day.”
