Watch: New video to support potential Jersey election candidates

Jersey Islanders who are thinking of standing for election next year can find out more about how to write a manifesto, campaigning, and standing for election in a new video released by Vote.je

To stand for election, candidates need to produce a manifesto – a short statement which outlines what they believe and what they hope to achieve if elected. As part of the election process, all candidates are also invited to take part in hustings – an open meeting where members of the public can ask questions.

In addition to the video, Mark Egan (Greffier of the States) and Lisa Hart (Deputy Greffier of the States) will be online for a live Q&A session on Thursday 2nd December at 7pm, via the Vote.je YouTube channel. Islanders can submit questions in advance of the event by emailing statesgreffe@gov.je or live via the YouTube event.

Both the video and the Q&A aim to help potential candidates understand:

  • How to write a manifesto
  • How to campaign effectively, including rules around spending
  • How to take part in a husting successfully

The session is part of an ongoing package of training and support for election candidates ahead of next year’s election on 22nd June 2022. Resources include video tutorials, live Q&As and information on key terms and processes.

Deputy Greffier, Lisa Hart, explains: “I know from previous elections that potential candidates always have lots of questions about the process of standing for election. We hope that these new resources will encourage more Islanders – who are perhaps just toying with the idea – to see it as something they can do.”
