Offshore law and governance services firm, Mourant, has appointed insolvency and commercial litigation specialist Justine Lau to its partnership.

Justine, who joined Mourant from Mayer Brown in 2018, has more than 10 years’ experience advising on a broad range of contentious and insolvency related matters. Her practice involves advising stakeholders in all forms of external administrations, as well as acting for parties involved in contentious restructurings and general financial services disputes.

Mourant Hong Kong Head of Litigation, Shaun Folpp, said: “Justine has rapidly and successfully become a significant part of our team, and her admission to the partnership is testament to this. Clients are impressed with her knowledge and experience and she has already made a real impact in terms of complementing our existing team and helping us to drive the firm’s expansion in the region.”

Mourant Managing Partner in Hong Kong, Paul Christopher added: “Justine not only provides first class technical advice but she has the broader skills to deliver exceptional and responsive client service. More than this, her admission to the partnership further signals our investment as a firm in providing clients with the best offshore legal and corporate services in the Asia market. We’re the fastest growing offshore firm in Asia, with bench strength across all our practices areas. Our teams advise on many of the region’s most high-profile and complex transactions and disputes, with a particular emphasis on private equity and real estate. Justine is joining the partnership at an incredibly exciting time for us and I’d like to extend my congratulations to her.

Globally, Mourant’s litigation practice is one of the largest in the offshore world. Last year, lawyers from the firm played leading roles in some of the largest and most high-profile offshore disputes, including the Madoff fraud-related Pearson v Primeo Fund and the related Primeo v. HSBC case, as well as the Carlyle Capital Corporation case, one of the largest to be brought before the court in the Channel Islands. During this period Mourant also acted in a number of disputes before the Privy Council, including in relation to the collapse of the Weavering investment fund.

Justine is a director of the International Women’s Insolvency & Restructuring Confederation, a worldwide, non-profit corporation that promotes women in restructuring-related professions and provides opportunities for the education, business development, leadership and mentoring of women in restructuring-related professions.
