A new inter-island ferry service will operate between Guernsey and Jersey from next May.
It will offer day trips for visitors as well as an alternative for commuters, and could include an Alderney link as part of the new nautical network.
A tender process run jointly by Guernsey and Jersey’s governments begins today, with both States pledging to offer financial support to underwrite the successful applicant to ensure it remains viable.
Condor Ferries and Bumblebee, who already operate a Guernsey to Alderney service, plus seven other companies have have expressed an initial interest, but now all those who think they could make a success of the new sea link are being encouraged to come forward formally.
Jersey’s Economic Development Minister, Senator Lyndon Farnham, said: “It is essential that we improve the opportunity for islanders and visitors to travel between the islands as soon as possible and the strong level of interest at this stage bodes well for the successful establishment of a service next year. I would encourage all operators who have so far expressed an interest to submit a tender.”
The President of Guernsey’s Economic Development Committee, Deputy Charles Parkinson, said: “The Committee was pleased to see such a positive response to the expressions of interest for this service. It demonstrates that there is a clear desire from a range of operators to establish a viable and sustainable service. We know from the approaches we have had to the Committee that this is something that the public in both Guernsey and Jersey are very keen to see established.”
The tender process is open until mid-January, and you can apply here.
