Professor Janine Griffiths-Baker has been appointed as the new Director and Chief Executive of the Jersey Institute of Law.
Professor Griffiths-Baker has a distinguished career as an academic leader, most recently as Dean of Nottingham Law School, at Nottingham Trent University, one of the largest law schools in Europe.
With over 24 year’s experience in higher education, Professor Griffiths-Baker has taught in the fields of criminal law, property law, the law of evidence and legal ethics, and supervised research students in these areas. She has a particular interest in legal ethics and the professional regulation of the legal profession, frequently providing advice to national and international bodies on regulatory issues and training. She was appointed Professor of Law at the age of 36.
In 2015, given her extensive academic experience, leadership and programme development, she was made a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Since 2010, she has also been a member of the International Advisory Board for the Journal of Legal Ethics.
Although her appointment is from immediate effect, she will initially remain in the UK and work remotely because of the CoVid-19 travel restrictions in place and then relocate to the island as soon as practical.
Stephen Baker, the Chairman of the Board of Governors at the Institute said: “I am delighted that we have been able to secure someone with the standing and expertise that Janine will bring to the Institute. She will help us further develop and grow the Institute and we are confident the Institute will go from strength to strength under her leadership.”
He continued: “The Board wishes to thank her predecessor Dr David Marrani for his substantial contribution to the Institute and wishes him well in his future career.”
