Local tech firm helps Jersey’s school children draw their ‘lines on the sand’

A local technology firm has joined forces with the Jersey Festival of Words to create a website showcasing the creative work of the island’s schoolchildren, in support of the National Trust’s Line In the Sand anniversary this coming weekend.

Linesonthesand.org.je was created by Nexus Tech Jersey and digital design agency The Collective with support from Highlands College, and features short videos containing environmentally-themed poems, music and artwork from students.

“Jersey’s children and young adults appreciate their coastline and have much to say with regards its protection and preservation,” said Festival of Words vice-chair Paul Bisson. “With this website we are providing a creative platform for them to be heard, and an opportunity for parents and teachers across the island to submit, share and showcase students’ work.”

The website already features class poems from First Tower, Samares, JCP and St Mary, as well as individual contributions from students including Saoirse Thomas and Hudson Gregory. Its creators are inviting further submissions over the coming months, and are encouraging all parents, teachers and students to watch the videos currently on display for ideas and inspiration.

Local poet Juliette Hart’s poem ‘Lines On the Sand’, which was written especially for the project’s launch and performed at the recent Festival of Words, is also included on the website.

Gary Stewart, CEO of Nexus Tech Jersey, said that his firm were delighted to be involved in the project. “Lines On the Sand is a great initiative, and aligns with our company’s efforts to be more conscious of the impact that our actions have on the environment. We’re pleased to be supporting the Festival of Words, and it’s been a real pleasure seeing the fantastic work that the children have created.”

The launch of the website has been timed to coincide with National Trust and Jersey National Park’s activities this weekend, which will see family events at the Frances Le Sueur Centre in St Ouen’s Bay as it is ‘re-launched’ as The Jersey (Coastal) National Park Information, Education and Events Centre.

“The Lines On the Sand website is passionate, creative and inspirational,’ said National Trust CEO Charles Alluto. ‘It demonstrates that our young people really care about our coastline. I would encourage all the young writers and artists out there to consider contributing to this fantastic project.”
