A local team is preparing to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for Les Bourgs Hospice in memory of 26-year-old Rose Haysom, who died from adenocarcinoma, a rare form of cancer, in February 2025.

The team is made up of Steve Haysom, Lily Haysom, Christian Povall, Erin Scullion and Helena de Carteret, who will take on the KilimanjaRose Charity Trek.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, standing at 19,341 feet above sea level.

The group hopes to reach the summit on 20 September, which would have been Rose’s 28th birthday.

Steve Haysom said Rose had been “so brave and inspirational” during her treatment and had used Instagram to document her experience and help break down some of the stigma and fear surrounding cancer.

He said the care Rose received at Les Bourgs Hospice had also made a significant difference to her and those around her.

“The care she received from the staff at Les Bourgs Hospice was exemplary and allowed family and friends to have peace and tranquillity to support Rose in her final days,” he said.

The team is raising money for the hospice in recognition of the support it provides to islanders and their families.

Steve Haysom added: “We are aware of the current running costs of the Hospice and wanted to raise the money to give something back to Les Bourgs and the community.”
