It is with an overwhelming sense of pride that I watched two incredible local Chefs, Joe Baker of Number 10 Restaurant and Lee Smith of Samphire, perform sheer magic on TV.
To have not only just one of the three South West slots of BBC TV’s ‘The Great British Menu’ taken by a Jersey Chef, but two is an outstanding testament to the local offering here.
For me this continues to drive my belief that what we have on island is disproportionate to the size of island we live on, and a blessing for all here or visiting.
This, for me, also highlights that if you are focused and passionate, you can achieve your dreams. Joe told us on TV, while pictured next to our stunning beaches, that it was a childhood dream of his, and to be on the Great British Menu is something he always aspired to.
Watching those with a passion, drive and determination come into our industry is an absolute pleasure. We can provide the environment where you can achieve these goals provided, you’re willing to put the time and effort in. this for me reflects what Hospitality really is.
Watching adverts on TV, you see recruiters for the forces saying you can be anything within their industry, we are certainly no different. The vibrancy, diversity, passion and challenges that face us daily provide that edge over a lot of other careers.
Hospitality jobs these days provide more and more opportunities to go where you truly want in life. Looking back on my career so far, I would say that alone is a testament to what can be achieved, the same for the two incredible chefs we watched on TV.
It’s never too late to start a new career or take that next step, I’d say we have the best platform to offer it too.
