The number of Jersey’s active cases of COVID-19 has continued to climb and at the time of writing, there are 106.
In this afternoons press conference, Jersey’s Chief Minister, John Le Fondré explained that the increase is not completely linked to people traveling to the island. In particular, he cited a work related dinner and a beach party.
He appealed to young adults to be responsible for their actions and to think how they would feel if their actions caused their grandparents to catch it
Dr Ivan Muscat made it clear that if you gather in a group (such as bonfire parties), there can only be a maximum of 20 people and they must socially distance by at least 1 metre – 2 metres is safer and more preferable. He always reminded islanders to wash their hands at least 5 times a day.
Dr Muscat was asked about the increase of cases within children and whether the schools should close. He replied that temporary closure of affected year groups may be needed.
We need to act responsibly to avoid stricter measures.
Despite many people not wearing masks when in public indoor spaces, no legislation has been introduced regarding the wearing of masks. Some may feel that we are ‘teetering on the edge of a lockdown’, but the Chief Minister said he is trying to avoid a lockdown, which would impact peoples wellbeing and livelihoods.
