Two Jersey men who endured mental and physical exhaustion to row across the Atlantic for charity will be sharing their experiences at a breakfast event this month.
Steve Hayes and Peter Wright left the Canary Islands last December in their 23-foot boat Dragonfish to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic.
As well as the personal challenge, the two men wanted to raise funds for Durrell and MacMillan Cancer Support Jersey. So far the challenge has raised just over £10,000 via their sportsgiving pages. They will also be donating 100% of the sale proceeds from their ocean rowing boat when sold.
It took them 54 days to reach Antigua on the other side of the ocean and along the way they overcame extreme weather, sleep deprivation and an overwhelming sense of isolation. More people have travelled into space than have rowed the Atlantic.
On 23rd June they will talk about their experience at a breakfast sponsored by Investec Bank (Channel Islands) Limited, where they will recount their adventure and will show for the first time the official video of their experience.
Andy Smith, Jersey Branch Manager at Investec Bank (Channel Islands) Limited said: “We were delighted to support Steve and Pete’s epic challenge and we are looking forward to hearing their stories and seeing their video for the first time. This will be a unique opportunity and we hope as many people as possible will come along to learn more about what they experienced, and to support the two charities that will benefit from their heroic efforts.”
The event, One Ocean, Two Rowers, 54 Days and 1,000 Challenges – the story of two men and their boat in a race like no other – is at the Royal Yacht on 23rd June. The event is free but a raffle is being held to raise funds for the two charities. Space is limited and anyone wanting to attend can find further information here.
