Jersey Island Geopark launches new series of Geowalks exploring 600 million years of Island history

The aspiring Jersey Island Geopark has unveiled a new programme of guided Geowalks, inviting Islanders and visitors to explore Jersey’s extraordinary story through a series of immersive coastal and countryside experiences.

The walks form part of the Geopark’s ongoing mission to connect people with the Island’s internationally significant landscapes, history and natural heritage as Jersey continues its journey towards UNESCO Global Geopark status.

Among the featured experiences is Jersey’s Journey from the South Pole, a guided walk exploring how the Island travelled from its origins near the South Pole to its present position over more than 600 million years. Beginning in St Aubin’s Harbour, the walk uncovers evidence of ancient oceans, Ice Ages and the landscapes once inhabited by mammoths and woolly rhinos.

The expanded Geowalk programme also includes experiences exploring Jersey’s fault lines, dramatic coastal geology, oyster heritage, literary landscapes and the Island’s changing relationship with climate, sea level and nature.

Designed and delivered by knowledgeable local Geopark Guides, the walks encourage participants to experience Jersey as a “living classroom” where geology, culture, archaeology and ecology intersect.

Paul Chambers, Head of Geopark, said: “Every walk reveals another chapter of Jersey’s story – from volcanic fire and shifting continents to Ice Age tundra and coastal communities shaped by the sea. These experiences help people connect more deeply with the Island and understand why Jersey’s landscapes are globally significant.”
