Jersey Hospice Care at 40: Looking to the future
Share on LinkedInTwitterFacebookEmail

Jersey Hospice Care is marking 40 years of helping Islanders facing life limiting or terminal illness to live their life to the full, by launching a campaign to support its work for many more decades to come.

Jersey Hospice Care provides specialist palliative care for anyone with a life limiting or terminal illness. The philosophy is to help people live their life to the full, no matter their individual circumstances.

Over the past four decades the charity has grown considerably from its roots, building a dedicated team of healthcare professionals, volunteers and supporters who have been committed to improving quality of life for patients and their families facing life limiting or terminal illness.

As the charity reflects on what has been achieved over the last 40 years, its focus in its anniversary year is very much on the next 40 and beyond.

Jersey Hospice Chief Executive Mike Palfreman said: “This is a milestone year for us; an opportunity to acknowledge the huge contribution made to our community by our professional staff, our volunteers, and our supporters. It’s also the right time to talk about where we are heading next. We are entering an exciting new phase for the organisation, and while we are determined to remain at the forefront of hospice care we will continue to evolve our services to meet the changing needs of our community.”

Throughout 2023 a programme of events is planned to mark the Ruby Anniversary year, starting with a window takeover at de Gruchy in King Street. For two weeks in February a special ‘Future 40′ window design will invite Islanders to support Jersey Hospice Care, and inside the Arcade volunteers will be on hand to talk about the charity’s work and share ideas about how people can support it, for example by fundraising or volunteering.

The window has been provided free by de Gruchy, which has a long history of supporting the charity. Store Director John Marquis said: “de Gruchy is a High Street institution. We have been part of Island life for many generations, and it is important that we support our local community. Jersey Hospice Care has been caring for Islanders in need for decades and we wanted to acknowledge that and support the charity as it looks forward to the next 40 years and beyond.”

At the unveiling of the window at de Gruchy, John Marquis presented a cheque for £460 to Jersey Hospice Care which was raised by staff in memory of a colleague who passed away at the end of last year. The business has also chosen Jersey Hospice Care as its charity to support during 2023.

Islanders can find out more about the Future 40 campaign here.
