Jersey dog grooming salon marks two-year milestone

House of Poochie, a dog grooming salon founded by local couple Sophie Oakes and Matthew Vellam, is celebrating two years of trading this month.

Since opening in 2023, the St Helier-based business has grown from a start-up into a team of four, offering grooming services to dog owners across the island.

The salon was founded by Sophie Oakes, who was 21 at the time, with the aim of creating a calm, professional environment for dogs of all breeds and temperaments. The business has since developed a steady client base and is known for its personalised approach to dog grooming.

“We try to get to know each dog as an individual,” said Sophie. “Some dogs are nervous, some are excited, and others just need a bit of extra time or care. It’s important to us that dogs feel comfortable and safe.”

Looking ahead, the couple hope to continue building on their success and exploring ways to expand their services while maintaining their hands-on approach.

“At the heart of it, we’re just dog people who care about doing a good job,” Sophie added.
