Islanders join Jersey’s biggest Democracy Week yet

Jersey’s third annual Democracy Week was the biggest yet, with 22 events taking place across the Island.

Following the Election in June, the aim of Democracy Week 2022 was to provide Islanders of all ages with opportunities to have their say and to connect with newly elected States Members.

Over the course of the week:

  • Over 600 students engaged with States Members across nine Island schools
  • 31 Islanders learned about the history of Jersey’s parliament on free tours of the States Chamber
  • States Members spent eight hours discussing local issues with Islanders in the Town Centre on pop-up stands
  • 135 members of the public tuned in to watch and/or ask States Members questions during the first hybrid ‘Meet the Member’ Q&A event held at the Library and streamed on YouTube
  • Over 50 people entered The Big Wander quiz and captured their hopes for Jersey over the next four years in the Island Views poetry competition, following which the winners were announced and awarded prizes by judges Deputy Kristina Moore and Deputy Sam Mézec at an event at the Town Church
  • Over 1,000 Islanders learnt more about States Members in our new ‘Meet the Member’ video series, which can be viewed on all States Assembly social
    media channels.

Molly Jehan, Education Manager at the States Greffe, said: “Democracy Week 2022 saw our busiest schedule yet and was a fantastic opportunity for Islanders of all ages to have their say and meet with their elected representatives.

“Launching our ‘Meet the Member’ video series and regular hybrid Q&A events has been very exciting. We hope Islanders continue to engage with the democratic process through meeting with their States Members and sharing their thoughts about Jersey’s future.”
