Fifty employees from across HSBC’s business in Jersey came together to help plant and reinvigorate 150 metres of countryside hedgerow in St Peter recently.
Forming part of the Bank’s support of sustainable community initiatives, the hedgerow planting session was coordinated by Jersey Trees for Life, through its partnership with global not-for profit organisation One Tree Planted, with HSBC meeting the costs of all trees planted.
During the half day volunteering session, the Bank’s staff planted a mix of native hedgerow plants and trees, creating a new wildlife habitat, nurturing a new wildlife corridor and promoting biodiversity in Jersey’s countryside.
Elvina Aghajanyan, Head of HR, HSBC, Channel Islands and Isle of Man commented on the volunteering initiative: “HSBC has a tradition of supporting local conservation charities and this was a particularly unique way to play a small part in helping to protect and enhance our unique countryside in Jersey. It was also fantastic to be able to bring together colleagues from across the business – and, despite the cold temperatures, I think from a physical and mental wellbeing perspective, everyone benefited from spending some time in the great outdoors.”
Alex Morel, CEO, Jersey Trees for Life added: “Our purpose as a charity is to promote and facilitate the planting, conservation, protection and appreciation of trees and woodland in Jersey and it’s fantastic when we can engage and work with groups from across our community as volunteering sessions like this are really important in helping us to achieve our aims. Ultimately, we believe that by working together, we can make our island a greener, healthier, happier place, and that has to be good for everyone.”
