Guests staying at Sarnia Hotels have helped raise £10,278 for the environmental charity Guernsey Trees for Life by choosing to skip daily housekeeping.

To celebrate this donation, Trees for Life has gifted a tree to the hotel group, which has been planted in the gardens at Hotel de Havelet.

The sustainable housekeeping scheme was introduced in April 2024 by the hotel group, which owns and operates Best Western Moores Hotel, Les Rocquettes Hotel and Best Western Hotel de Havelet. Every time guests choose to forgo their daily room clean, Sarnia Hotels donates £2 to Guernsey Trees for Life.

Over the first 13 months of the initiative, daily housekeeping was skipped a total of 3,392 times, with the resulting donation funding the equivalent of more than 1,100 native trees and hedgerows in Guernsey. While the donation covers essential materials like tree guards and cable ties, the planting and planning work is carried out by Trees for Life’s team of volunteers.

Karel Harris, Managing Director of Sarnia Hotels, said: “We’re so pleased to see uptake of this initiative. In August alone, over 300 room cleans were skipped at Les Rocquettes Hotel.

“It’s such a small change but it’s had a big impact and allows us and our guests to contribute to a greener Guernsey. We know how important it is to protect the environment around us, and we’re proud to support the work of Guernsey Trees for Life.”

Andy McCutcheon, Technical Officer at Guernsey Trees for Life, added: “We’re hugely grateful to Sarnia Hotels for their support. Donations like this are vital for restoring habitats, increasing biodiversity, and supporting climate goals. It’s fantastic to see a hospitality business making sustainability such a natural part of the guest experience.”
