Guernsey’s Traffic and Highway Services will be installing eight new public electric car charging bays across the Odeon and Salerie car parks, subject to planning permission, increasing the number of public charging bays currently available.
In addition, two new charging bays for shared mobility will be installed at each location, enabling people to book shared vehicles on demand. Evie is the current local provider who will be granted permits for these spaces.
Installing these new charging points provides more infrastructure for the growing number of commercial and private electric vehicles in the island and is in line with one of the aims of Guernsey’s On-Island Integrated Transport Strategy, to achieve a greater proportion of cleaner, low emissions vehicles.
Laura Oxburgh, Head of On-Island Travel and Transport Implementation, said: “The number of electric vehicles in Guernsey has more than tripled since 2020, which highlights their increasing popularity and therefore the need to make sure that we have the supporting charging infrastructure in place.
“While people may have charging points at their home, it’s very useful for people to be able to put their car on charge while they’re at work, shopping or meeting someone in town. We know that these additional spaces are a step in the right direction, but there is more work needed in this space to support the island’s commitment to net zero.
“Shared mobility is another growing trend. While some people might need to use a car daily, we know that there are many people who only need to use a car from time to time, therefore owning a vehicle doesn’t make financial sense. Shared mobility schemes where you can hire a vehicle by the hour provides a much more flexible option that meets people’s needs.”
