The Guernsey Voluntary Service celebrates 75 years of service in May this year and to mark the occasion it is looking to recruit at least 75 new volunteers to help continue to run its services for the future.
With a focus on the Island’s elderly population, the Guernsey Voluntary Service (GVS) is best known for providing the ‘Meals on Wheels’ service. Perhaps less well-known are its additional services including two Social Clubs (with transport provided for attendees), blood donor calling services and bathing services for those who cannot safely do so at home.
All this is not possible without a cohort of dedicated volunteers. GVS requires over 45 volunteers per day to ensure its services can run. Volunteering for GVS is flexible, with shifts from as little as one hour per day. A typical Meals on Wheels shift takes approximately two and a half hours with volunteers usually completing one shift per month.
Mandy Le Bachelet, Manager at GVS said: “Our aim is to provide services which improve the wellbeing, physical and mental health of our clients on a daily basis, enabling them to lead more independent and active lives. We simply cannot do this without our wonderful volunteers. Our anniversary milestone offers us the opportunity to encourage those who may have a little spare time to volunteer with us.
“Not only are we incredibly flexible for those who are more pressed for time but we find that our volunteers often benefit as much as our clients do.”
