Julius Baer has agreed to sponsor the Guernsey Symphony Orchestra’s (GSO) Spring Concerts for the next three years.

The private bank’s funding will enable the GSO to invite guest section leaders and conductors over to Guernsey to play at the next three annual Spring Concerts; the first of which will be held on 23 March 2019, with further concerts in March 2020 and March 2021.

The 2019 concert will see Stephen Threlfall, Director of Music at Chetham’s School of Music serve as the guest conductor. Mr Threlfall has worked with the Royal Oman Symphony, the Amman Symphony and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestras and other ensembles including Canzonetta, Leeds Festival, the Northern Ballet and Northern Chamber Orchestra and the Manchester Camerata.

Julius Baer has had a presence in Guernsey since 1989 and has always been an active member of the corporate community with its support of charitable and worthy causes. The private bank employs more than 100 people in the island and sustained continued local job creation.

Stephen Burt, Branch Manager at Julius Baer in Guernsey, said: “We’re proud that our sponsorship will allow the people of Guernsey to enjoy top-quality classical music at the GSO’s Spring Concerts and will contribute to helping to develop musical talent on the island. We’re already looking forward to seeing the performance in the spring.”

During his visit Mr Threlfall will spend time with a number of young talented Guernsey musicians to develop their skills and share his experiences of working in music around the world.

Tim Wright, Chairman of the Guernsey Symphony Orchestra, said: “We’d like to thank Julius Baer for its three-year commitment to the Spring Concerts. This sponsorship will not only add something different to the concerts but it will also benefit the local music talent we have in Guernsey. We have a number of young members in the orchestra and playing alongside a conductor of Stephen’s stature, as well as guest section leaders, will give them valuable experience for the future.”

The three Julius Baer-sponsored concerts are planned to take place at St James Concert & Assembly Hall and approximately 400 guests are expected to attend the 2019 concert.
