The winner of the Guernsey Young Chef participated with 7 other competitors in the District heat in Southampton on Saturday.
Amongst tight competition, Samantha Browning from The Ladies’ College was the judges’ favourite and won this heat.
Her menu was pan-fried Guernsey caught bream with leek-infused mash, crispy parsnips, carrots, and a homemade fish sauce. It was followed by rhubarb and apple crumble with a golden oatmeal topping and homemade custard.
The judges commented on her attention to detail, the tastiness of all the elements in her dishes, her presentation skills, and her excellent time keeping.
She will now go forward, along with the runner-up from Jersey, to the South East England round in Maidstone, Kent, on the 8th March.
President Carla Bauer attended with Samantha and her parents. Carla said: ‘It was a delight and a surprise for Samantha to win, but her tasty dishes were very worthy of her success and she truly deserved the high recognition. It was a great win for Guernsey, we now wish her all the best in the next stage of the competition.’
