The Guernsey Retail Group has welcomed the decision by Condor Ferries to revert to its original schedule operated by its freight vessels from Portsmouth.
The move follows meetings and discussions between the Guernsey Retail Group (GRG), larger retailers and the ferry company in recent months after Condor’s change of operating pattern late last year meant much later arrivals into the Island, which were unsatisfactory, in particular for food retailing.
Sailings will now return to primarily 3am and 4pm arrivals Monday through to Saturday with additional, overnight capacity provided over weekends.
Jonathan Creasey, the GRG’s chairman, said: “We are pleased Condor recognises that the timely movement of food, medicines and all other imported goods on which the Island depends is crucial, along with resilience and the security of supply.
“Our concerns were made clear in meetings with their senior management back in February that the original schedule, which has run for many years, not only works but is also fundamental to the way the food and other retailers operate.
“Everyone is aware that living in these Islands can, at times, present unique transport challenges but a suitable and consistent set arrival times is paramount. So we support this change by Condor and will continue to monitor things closely.”
