During lockdown Guernsey Employment Trust (GET) celebrated their 5th Anniversary. Plans for a party were unfortunately cancelled and instead the charity reflected on their successes and challenges with helping disabled people and those with health conditions to find and maintain employment.
GET’s services are more in demand than they have ever been and although many employers are inclusive, the employment rate for disabled people and those with health conditions remains significantly lower than nondisabled people.
Meet Alex
Alex has difficulty with reading and writing. Becky, his support worker, helped Alex secure a short-term temporary role at Guernsey Electricity which was extended to a 2-year contract. Becky is on hand to support Alex with any training so he keeps up to date with company procedures.
Alex recently received a £50 reward from Guernsey Electricity for his hard work over lockdown, work his manager described as being ‘hot and horrible’, but Alex did it without complaint and to a high standard. He decided to use the £50 to buy everyone in his team a bacon butty.
Everyone needs an ‘Alex’ in their team!
