Girls That Row aim for European Success

Jersey female rowing quad, Girls That Row, are looking to expand their success off island this season with support from Highvern and Nexus Technology.

After an extensive training period the team now has the funding required to enter international races alongside high calibre competitors, in a bid to raise greater awareness of female participation in the sport in Jersey.

Captain Sarah Earles is joined by Emma Syvret, Abbi Syvret and Connie Huelin, rowing with experienced Cox, Sue Huelin. The rowers have been competing in the sport since 2016 and training as a foursome for the last two years, having enjoyed plenty of medal success on island to date.

To compete in major races in the UK and Europe required financial support, which has come from co-sponsors of the team HIGHVERN and Nexus Technology. Their substantial contribution will allow the girls to travel to events in Italy, France, Wales and England and to further promote the female aspect of the sport.

Sarah said: “Like many sports we battle for recognition against our male counterparts, which is why we set up our Girls That Row Instagram page to raise awareness. As well as serious sports women we wanted to shine a light on what a supportive community rowing is and play our part in growing the sport locally in Jersey. A medal off island is our ultimate goal, but we would be pleased just to encourage more girls to find their way into rowing.”

Martin Hall, Chief Executive of Highvern commented: “We are quite fond at HIGHVERN of an ambitious goal and so are delighted to be in a position to support Girls That Row this coming season. Championing teams like Girls That Row will hopefully continue to break the bias associated with women in sport, and help created a more equal and healthy society.”

Gary Stewart, Co-Founder and CEO of Nexus Technology, added: “As a company that champions the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation, we are thrilled to be supporting Girls That Row. We believe that sport has the power to bring people together, promote physical and mental wellbeing, and inspire us to achieve great things both individually and collectively. We are honoured to be part of this journey and look forward to seeing Girls that Row compete on the international stage.”

The team’s first challenge comes at the Welsh Coastal Rowing Championships on 29/30th April and will culminate with the World Coastal Rowing Championships in October in Italy.
