The Hook has set itself a challenge. The steak and sushi restaurant wants islanders to help it create a menu made entirely from Guernsey ingredients. Sam Jerrold, who owns the restaurant, explains why he’s launching a new Grow Local Eat Local campaign:
‘At The Hook we’re all about using the freshest, highest quality ingredients. It’s what makes the difference between an average meal and something that guests remember and come back for time after time. We are also very aware of our environmental impact, which is why we go to great lengths to source top quality beef from Coombe Farm in Somerset, reared organically on a natural grass diet. In terms of wine, too, we stock a wide range that has been made using biodynamic methods that leave the land in as good or better shape than it was before.
‘With sustainability in mind, we always look to bring more and more locally caught fish and shellfish, as well as locally grown vegetables, into the kitchen. But we’ve set ourselves a mission to take things one step further. We had the idea of creating a menu that was made up entirely from Guernsey produce. Whether it’s meat, fish, cheese, vegetables, bread or fruit, as long as it has been grown, fished, farmed or made here in Guernsey we will consider it for our menu.
‘This is where we would like some help. We want islanders tell us about their favourite food or drink that is made, caught or farmed locally. By buying locally produced food and drink you are putting money directly back into the island, supporting wages and helping to create more jobs. Plus, food that takes less time to reach your plate always tastes so much better.
‘So please get in touch with your suggestions of suppliers/ producers to add to our list. In January we will unveil our Grow Local Eat Local menu to participating local producers at a special dinner event, as well as at a separate evening for members of the public. We also intend to add some of the dishes to our specials menu.’
