Four post office closures within Channel Island COOP stores

Following discussions with Channel Islands COOP, Jersey Post has confirmed that four of its post offices located within the CI COOP stores across the Island will close later this year.

Beaumont, Georgetown and Pontac post offices will close on 27 October 2023, and Don Street post office will close after the Christmas period on 31 December 2023.

Julie Thomas (pictured), Managing Director of Jersey Post Ltd, said: “We are acutely aware of the important role our post office network plays in the local community, and we’re disappointed that we are unable to continue running four post offices within the CI COOP stores. We want to thank The Channel Islands Cooperative for running these post offices from their premises over such a long period of time. Through close working with CI COOP, these branches have been selected due to their close proximity to alternative post offices where customers can still access their usual range of services.”

Jersey Post is always interested in hearing from anyone who would like to know more about running and managing a post office. If there are any interested parties that would like more information on this matter, please contact Neil Harrison, Head of Retail and Counter Services, by email by no later than Friday 22 September 2023.

Mark Cox, CEO of CI COOP, said: “As a Society, we take immense pride in supporting our communities and have always recognised the vital role post offices play within local areas. We have discussed various options with Jersey Post, and, regrettably, we have concluded that the only option is to close these four post offices within our CI COOP stores. The running costs to operate these offices combined with the decline in business and postal volumes, the removal of our own foreign currency services and recruitment challenges have made it unsustainable to continue.”

Jersey Post continues to operate two flagship post offices, Broad Street and Rue des Pres. In addition, the Airport, St Aubin, and Sandpiper offices remain unchanged, and the CI COOP will continue to run its post offices in Grande Marche St. Helier, Grande Marche St. Peter, Maufant and St. Brelade.
