Guernsey Electricity has promoted Sarah Walden to the dual role of company secretary and financial controller.

As company secretary Sarah, who has worked at Guernsey Electricity for nearly 25 yearsafter joining as a bursary student, will have responsibility for ensuring the company meets its legal and statutoryobligations. She will oversee the maintenance of statutory records whilst advising and assisting the board and company on corporate governance matters.

In her role as financial controller she will produce statutory and regulatory accounts, ensuring compliance with appropriate accounting standards and maintaining the integrity of, and control over, the company’s financial systems.

Julian Turner, chief finance officer and deputy chief executive officer of Guernsey Electricity, said: “The company secretary and financial controller roles are hugely important within the organisation and Sarah thoroughly deserves this promotion. She has worked her way up through the company and is widely respected amongst her colleagues and the board. Her detailed knowledge of the company and attention to detail is exemplary and I wish her every success.”

Sarah added: “My role within the company has developed alongside my experience and it is extremely gratifying to be promoted to this senior management position. Guernsey Electricity has continued to be a supportive employer and I am proud to have progressed from bursary student. I’m looking forward to the challenges of my new role at what is an interesting time for both the company and energy market.”

Sarah joined Guernsey Electricity as a bursary student while studying accounting and financial analysis at Warwick University. On completion of her studies she was subsequently appointed as trainee accountant in 1997 and progressed to commercial accountant two years later, before taking on the role of financial analyst which she held for 12 years. Sarah spent a year shadowing the previous company secretary before officially taking over the role in September 2018.

Sarah is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and holds the Diploma in Treasury Management from the Association of Corporate Treasurers.
