Summer Holiday Art Club: Week 3

The Harbour Gallery Jersey is continuing its programme of children’s art workshops during the summer holidays.

Week three takes place from Monday 3 to Friday 7 August, with morning sessions from 10am to noon and afternoon sessions from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

The programme includes activities for children from around age five or six up to 13, although the age range varies between workshops. Parents may attend with younger children where indicated.

On Monday morning, Jo Alm Bastiman will help children create their own fairy or elf houses. Children aged six and seven should attend with a parent, while those aged eight and over may attend independently.

Monday afternoon’s keepsake box decorating workshop, also led by Jo Alm Bastiman, is for children aged six and over. This session is now fully booked.

On Tuesday morning, Pat Robson will lead a workshop for children aged seven and over, creating an A3 picture on canvas board using pieces of ceramic collected and washed from the beach. Children can also add sea glass and mosaic tesserae to their artwork.

Following the popularity of the T-shirt printing workshop held during week one, an additional session has been added on Tuesday afternoon. Jo Alm Bastiman will lead the workshop, with more T-shirts purchased after a number of families were unable to secure places on the original session.

Wednesday morning’s workshop will be led by illustrator Jamie Willow. Children will learn how to develop a comic book adventure, taking an idea through storyboarding and character design before creating a finished comic book panel.

In the afternoon, Corey Ceccarelli will lead Tides of Creativity, a sculpting workshop using seaweed-based biomaterials. Participants will explore the connections between art, nature and sustainability while investigating the form, structure and texture of seaweed.

On Thursday morning, children aged eight and over can stencil and decorate a reusable tote bag with Jo Alm Bastiman.

Thursday afternoon’s session will combine storytelling and crafts with children’s author Jennie Jewell. She will read two of her books, introducing Guardian Aliens Orion and Zed before sharing the story of Drip the Drop. The readings will be followed by related craft activities. The session is suitable for children aged five and over when accompanied by an adult.

On Friday morning, Jo Alm Bastiman will lead a pebble picture workshop for children aged six and over. Participants will use pebbles and small decorative details to create pictures that bring their ideas to life and represent something about themselves. Children aged six and seven should attend with a parent, while those aged eight and over may attend independently.

The final workshop of the week will be led by Sophia Morgan on Friday afternoon. Children aged six and over will create colourful wall hangings and friendship bracelets during a creative weaving session.

Spaces remain available on all week three workshops except Monday afternoon.

Sessions cost £20, including all materials. Each child attending the Summer Holiday Club will also receive a pack of drawing pencils and a sketchbook. Children who attended St Helier Primary School can book sessions for £10, supported by the Bosdet Foundation.

Parents are asked to bring children to the workspace, collect them from the same location and complete a registration form before the session. The gallery recommends arriving 10 minutes early. Suitable clothing should be worn, as acrylic paint may be used.
