Hidden in plain sight: Modern day slavery in offshore jurisdictions

The Institute of Directors (IoD) Jersey will host a pivotal breakfast meeting titled ‘Hidden in Plain Sight: Modern Day Slavery in Offshore Jurisdictions’.

This event, kindly sponsored by Ventiro, will take place on Thursday 27 November at the Royal Yacht Hotel & Spa, from 08:30 – 11:00. The event will bring together business leaders, policymakers and legal experts to shine a spotlight on labour exploitation and modern day slavery risks within global and local supply chains.

Event Highlights:

  • Keynote Address by Tristan Forster, CEO of FSI Worldwide, on the spectrum of modern slavery, examining human trafficking through to debt bondage, and the critical ‘Employer Pays’ ethical recruitment principle.
  • Insights from James Clarry, CEO of Justice & Care, featuring survivor stories and data-driven analysis of human trafficking, and exploring the role of business and finance in both facilitating and combating exploitation.
  • A perspective from another Crown Dependency by Maria Bridson (Immigration and Corporate Law), offering comparative insights from the Isle of Man’s highly publicised experiences and its approach to anti-slavery measures.

The session will conclude with a panel reflection and an open Q&A, empowering attendees with actionable strategies to mitigate modern slavery risks and to advocate for policy reform within Jersey’s regulated environment.

Hosted by IoD Jersey’s Sustainability Subcommittee, chaired by Tom Noel, the event promises to be informative and enlightening.

Chair of IoD Jersey’s Sustainability Subcommittee, Tom Noel states: “Modern day slavery is not a distant problem; it can lurk within even the most tightly regulated jurisdictions. It is not just an issue for our care, retail, agricultural, or hospitality industries – this is something that impacts any business in Jersey, whether dealing with service providers or handling money flows. Our goal is to equip Jersey’s business community with the tools and insights needed to identify and eradicate these hidden exploitative practices.”

Who should attend:

  • Business leaders,
  • HR and compliance professionals,
  • Legal advisors,
  • Regulators,
  • IoD members with interests in ESG, ethical governance, and responsible business practices.
