On International Women’s Day, the Employment and Equal Opportunities Service is recognising and helping to promote the importance of gender equality and eliminating discrimination.

The Employment and Equal Opportunities Service (EEOS) plays an important role in the local community by providing a free and confidential service which is available to anyone in Guernsey who may have queries or a dispute relating to equality, inclusion, and discrimination in the workplace. They can assist with general advice and guidance to help resolve disputes and making complaints to the Employment and Discrimination Tribunal.

EEOS takes matters of discrimination seriously and have statutory authority to take enforcement action against any organisation found to be breaching Guernsey’s discrimination legislation.

EEOS also provides advice to employers on steps they should be taking to avoid potential complaints, best practice to promote equality and inclusion in the workplace, and guidance on employment law.

Stephen Glencross, Director of EEOS, said: “Unfortunately, even though its nearly 20 years since Guernsey’s sex discrimination legislation came into force, we still see queries and complaints come in about potential discrimination and inequality. These can range from questions about pay inequality to pregnancy related discrimination and harassment. EEOS is here to offer free pre-complaint conciliation to try to help people to resolve these discrimination issues as swiftly as possible without the need for litigation. Where appropriate we can also take enforcement action to prevent discrimination happening in the future.

“Our team have many years of experience in supporting businesses, employees and anyone who has questions, issues, or concerns about discrimination in the
workplace.

Further details on our service can be found on our website. Alternatively, please do give us a call on (01481) 220026 and we’ll be happy to assist.”
