Over the summer, 9 local students have been working with some of the Island’s leading digital companies, Cortex, Resolution IT, First Central Group, PwC, Deloitte, EY Channel Islands and the Digital Greenhouse.
The six-week paid summer internship has been designed specifically for Guernsey’s post-16 students who are passionate about the digital world and are seeking to work on projects for local employers to develop their digital and creative career pathways.
The sixth iteration of the programme proves itself again to be incredibly valuable for students looking to begin a career in the digital sector by gaining hands-on experience, building data systems, shadowing cyber incident first responders and testing software programmes.
The programme concluded with a presentation evening where this year’s cohort spoke about their journey and the projects they had been working on ranging from marketing projects, programming and web development, data reporting and learning about data forensics.
Ben Wratten, Programme and Engagement Manager of the Digital Greenhouse commented: “Working in partnership with local businesses to provide young people with an insight into career routes in Guernsey is hugely valuable and has had such a positive impact for those who have taken part over the past 6 years. It has been fantastic to see the interesting projects that the students have worked on over summer developing their skills in a range of areas and highlighting the breadth of innovative companies we have operating here in the Island.”
Digital intern Jared Sarchet who was placed with First Central Insurance & Technology Group shared: “This internship has definitely helped with future career choices as I now have experience in this industry and I now know what I do and don’t enjoy about this line of work. I would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in a career in the digital area.”
Samantha Preece who was placed with Cortex commented: “I would encourage anyone considering this opportunity to take it. It is a great experience and allows you to understand how your skills translate into a real-world environment. Participating in the internship has confirmed my decision to pursue a career in software development.”
