Digital Innovator Programme wants to create Guernsey 2:0

As part of the Digital Innovator Programme, which is powered by First Central Group, the Digital Greenhouse is running a second Pi-Top and Python course.

The free intensive one-day session aims to give students an introduction to the Pi-Top device and operating system, and to the Python coding language.

The next course will take place on Saturday, 8 December to coincide with the close of National Computer Science Week.

The Digital Innovator Programme started during National Coding Week in September and is running up until July 2019. It consists of a series of full day courses aimed at 14-21 year olds.

John Davison, chief information officer at First Central Group said: “Our involvement with the Digital Innovator Programme and Digital Greenhouse is very exciting.  There is a profound digital skills gap in Guernsey. We have young people leaving school without the digital skills needed for the future business economy. While students are technically proficient and skilled in writing code, code is just one aspect of computing.

“Alongside coders you also need creative innovators, software designers, analysts and solution architects. And through our work with The Digital Greenhouse we’re providing a space to develop and enhance these skills.”

The programme is part of an ongoing partnership between First Central Group and the Digital Greenhouse. Lucy Kirby, head of digital, Digital Greenhouse said: “Partnering with companies like First Central Group is essential for developing pure digital skills on the island.

“The Digital Innovator Programme will help students acquire skills through real hands-on learning focussed on developing creative thinking and the practical application of ideas.”

The Digital Greenhouse is also holding a Discover Digital Careers Fair and CV Clinic on Thursday, 20 December where representatives from First Central Group and other local technology firms will be discussing pathways into the digital and creative sectors, and providing advice on how to build a CV.
