A new fun run takes flight for the first time on Good Friday, 19 April.

The Bedell Cristin chicken run is a 5km fun run for anyone of any age.  It is being organised by community-focused running club Distance.gg.

Beginning and ending at Pembroke, participants will be given a chicken hat to wear during the run to celebrate the Easter weekend in a fun way. Profits from the event will be donated to the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation.

200 places are available and can be booked on Race Nation for £17 or a discounted entry of £30 for a family group of four. As part of the entry fee runners will receive a t-shirt and chicken hat.

As well as the run, there will be an Easter egg hunt and other family-friendly activities at the Pembroke.

“The chicken run promises to be a great day out for all the family and a different way to start the Easter weekend,” said Distance.gg’s Michael Quittenden.

“We want the event to be a real visual spectacle and thought that having 200 runners dressed as chickens will be a great sight for passers-by and an unusual challenge for the runners themselves.”

Kate Ovenden from event sponsor Bedell Cristin said: “We hope  that this event can become a regular part of Guernsey’s Easter sporting calendar, and we’re looking forward to seeing the chickens find their legs and take to the streets.”

Volunteers from Distance.gg, Bedell Cristin and the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation will be on hand to organise the day including the Easter egg hunt on the common.

Jo Priaulx, trustee of the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation, said: “We’re so grateful to the organisers for choosing the Foundation to benefit from what is going to be a really fun event.

“Funds raised will be used to provide support to Bailiwick of Guernsey premature babies and seriously poorly children and their families. We provide equipment and baby boxes to the Guernsey Neonatal Unit. Our other main objective is managing and maintaining two home-from-home apartments a few steps away from Southampton Hospital.

“Families whose child is transferred to Southampton Hospital can use a PPBF flat where they can stay in comfort, privacy and have a place to do their washing or cook a meal. These flats cost £30,000 a year to run so the Chicken Run will be a huge help towards the large on-going costs.”
