Carey Olsen has advised specialist alternative investment manager Gresham House on the launch and designation of its Guernsey-domiciled biodiversity strategy as a Guernsey Natural Capital Fund.

It is the first fund to receive the designation under the island’s new natural capital regime.

The Gresham House fund has been granted the Natural Capital Fund designation by the Guernsey Financial Services Commission. The designation marks a significant milestone in the development of Guernsey’s regulated natural capital framework and reinforces the island’s position at the forefront of sustainable finance innovation.

Gresham House’s strategy invests in large-scale habitat creation and ecological restoration projects, commonly referred to as habitat banks, which support compliance with England’s 2024 biodiversity net gain regulations. The strategy forms part of Gresham House’s wider natural capital platform, which spans sustainable forestry, sustainable agriculture and nature-based solutions. The firm is ranked among the top 10 natural capital managers globally.

The Carey Olsen team advising on the matter was led by partner Ben Morgan (pictured), supported by senior associate Oliver Orton, associate Tabitha Lepp and trainee solicitor James Wong.

Ben Morgan said: “We are delighted to have supported Gresham House on securing the first Natural Capital Fund designation in Guernsey. This landmark development demonstrates the strength and credibility of Guernsey’s sustainable finance framework and the growing maturity of natural capital as an institutional asset class. It has been a privilege to work alongside Gresham House on a strategy that is driving meaningful biodiversity outcomes while delivering for investors.”
