Litigation Legal Director – Remote

As specialists in the in-house legal market, it’s rare that we’ll represent a law firm. However, we’re making an exception for one of our long-standing clients because this is anything but a typical private practice role.

One of the Partners in this team made the move from an in-house legal role because the opportunity to join one of the UK’s leading education litigation practices was simply too good to ignore. The environment, quality of work and reputation of the team made the move an overwhelmingly positive one. Since then, the already well-established practice has continued to go from strength to strength and is now at the point where it’s having to consider turning work away.

They’re looking for a Senior Litigation Associate / Legal Director (6+ PQE) to help support the continued growth of this exceptional team.

The work

You’ll act for universities, further education colleges and private education providers on a fascinating range of disputes including:

  • • Student breach of contract claims
  • • Equality Act claims
  • • Judicial Reviews
  • • Consumer law disputes
  • • Regulatory challenges
  • • Broader commercial disputes where required

Unlike many commercial litigation roles, you’ll spend much of your time dealing with individuals rather than large corporates. Most claimants are litigants in person, so success comes from combining excellent technical litigation skills with empathy, sound judgement and strong communication.

You’ll manage your own caseload from instruction through to resolution, working closely with senior stakeholders within client organisations to balance legal, commercial and reputational considerations. Importantly, this isn’t a volume litigation environment. You’ll have the time to think, advise and make sensible strategic decisions.

Who might this suit?

You don’t need to have spent your career in education litigation.

We’re interested in experienced litigators with excellent technical ability and a thorough understanding of the Civil Procedure Rules who enjoy running matters independently.

You could currently specialise in:

  • Commercial Litigation
  • Personal Injury
  • Insurance Litigation
  • Professional Negligence
  • General Civil Litigation

Experience of student, education or consumer disputes would be advantageous but isn’t essential.

Why consider the move?

  • Join one of the UK’s leading education litigation practices.
  • Work alongside lawyers who have experienced both private practice and in-house legal environments and understand what clients really need.
  • Develop long-standing relationships with exceptional institutional clients.
  • Genuine autonomy and responsibility.
  • Friendly, collaborative team culture.
  • Excellent work-life balance.
  • Minimal focus on billing compared with many commercial litigation teams.
  • No expectation for senior lawyers to spend their time chasing new business—the practice is already exceptionally well established. Your focus will be on delivering outstanding client service, nurturing existing client relationships and helping expand an already thriving team.

Location and Flexible Working

The team is based in Birmingham, and whilst attendance in the Birmingham office around once a week would be beneficial for collaboration and team development, this role can be undertaken on a predominantly remote basis.

Given the nature of the work, there will be occasions where travel to courts throughout the UK is required. Outside of those commitments, you’ll have the flexibility to work remotely, providing an excellent work-life balance while remaining closely connected to colleagues and clients.

If you’ve reached the stage in your career where you’re looking for intellectually stimulating litigation, sophisticated clients, genuine flexibility and a role where quality of work matters more than time recording, we’d love to have a confidential conversation.
