Calling mural artists for exciting new public art project ‘Art in the Arches’

ArtHouse Jersey has announced a call-out to mural artists to take part in an exciting new public art project.

Art in the Arches, sponsored by Jersey Water, will see the design and production of six unique murals spread across numerous arches at Elizabeth Marina, all speaking to the theme Water, water, everywhere. Five to six artists will be commissioned to each work on a triptych (a work of art divided into three sections) incorporating three arches, creating a beautiful display of thought-provoking public art for Islanders to enjoy for years to come. The project has been made possible thanks to the sponsorship of Jersey Water, alongside support from the Jersey Community Foundation with funds from the Channel Islands Lottery and will be delivered in partnership with Art in the Frame Foundation (The Harbour Gallery Jersey) and Ports of Jersey. This Open Call is open to artists living in Jersey, the Channel Islands, the UK and France.

ArtHouse Jersey is calling for artists to join the project, hosting a number of workshops with local community groups hosted at The Harbour Gallery Jersey in May and June in the lead up to delivering their final murals in the warmer, drier summer months. Both the workshops and the final artworks will centre around the theme of our relationship with water, exploring its evolution from past, present to future.

Artists who are interested in taking part can visit the ArtHouse Jersey website’s Opportunities section to learn about what’s involved and how to apply. Artists are asked to submit an expression of interest to [email protected] no later than 23.59, Monday 6 May 2024.

Director of ArtHouse Jersey, Tom Dingle, said: “It is very exciting to be announcing this project along with Jersey Water and Art in the Frame Foundation. We’ve long considered the configuration of Elizabeth Marina to have great potential for artistic expression. Luckily for us so did one particularly generous donor who, along with our partners, has enabled us to deliver this incredibly positive and impactful project for the people of Jersey. It’s our hope the art breathes new life into this area and shines a fresh and vibrant light on a walkway already loved by Islanders.”

CEO of Jersey Water, Helier Smith, said: “After the success of Floating Earth last year, we are looking forward to partnering with ArtHouse Jersey on another thought-provoking and environmentally-focused art initiative that aims to encourage our community to think about water and our relationship with this precious resource. Making sure our Island has a sustainable water supply for future generations is a key priority for Jersey Water, particularly with the impact of population growth and climate change. This unique project will engage Islanders on many levels; we hope it also inspires them to think about their water use today and what the Island needs to secure water for tomorrow.”

Director of Art in the Frame Foundation, Pat Robson, said: “We are delighted to be working with ArtHouse Jersey on this very exciting project. Art in the Frame Foundation Jersey Charity no 21 was set up 23 years ago to support up and coming local artists and work in art education, a project like this is ‘just up our street,’ we could not be happier to be involved. This project will breathe new life into the area for the people of Jersey and those visiting the area.“
