Action for Children and Guernsey Arts are looking to commission an artist to create a mural to uplift a communal outdoor space.
The outdoor space is a communal area for service users of Action for Children’s training flats which are used to house those at risk of facing homelessness. The outdoor space provides a safe, communal area which allows space to socialise.
Requests from the young people using the space is for a bright and colourful mural, focusing on nature and flora that can provide a place to feel positive and connected to others.
As well as creating a positive environment, this project also presents a great opportunity for a locally based artist (or group of artists) to create work on a larger scale whilst providing positive engagement with young people. Thanks to support from both Hope for a Child, and working with Action for Children, an artist fee of £1000, plus additional materials, is available for the successful applicant(s). Designs submitted will be reviewed with the young people using the space in ongoing consultation.
Jade Kershaw, Community & Public Realm Officer at Guernsey Arts, said: “After the success of our last project with Action for Children, Guernsey Arts is thrilled to be working with the team again in order to provide more positive, social environments for young people. As well as creating an environment which can help with engagement and expression, these spaces are key to giving young people a space that they feel belongs to them, supporting their development and wellbeing. We look forward to working with Action for Children as the artist selection and installation progresses.”
Aaron Davies, Children’s Services Manager at Action for Children, said: “We know engaging in projects around the arts improves long term outcomes for young people and we are always pleased to work with Guernsey Arts on new projects and ideas. This particular project allows us to design a space where young people can create a sense of community, peer support and pride where they live. Having the opportunity for young people to work with an established artist is exciting and we are grateful to Guernsey Arts for making this idea come to fruition.”
