Figures produced by the The Guernsey Retail Group and feedback from shop owners indicate that the first two late night evenings have been successful and the sector locally continues to prosper.
The Guernsey Retail Group (GRG) has been running a promotion this year which encourages Islanders to enter the festive spirit earlier by attending the evenings on 30 November and 07 December. The group reports a 35% increase in footfall in Town last Thursday between 5pm and 9pm compared with the same day in 2022 and the majority of retailers have been pleased with the trade.
Korinne Le Page, Head of Retail Development at the Guernsey Retail Group, said: “Late night shopping has become a firm favourite in the calendar over many years and we are thrilled to note Islanders are supporting local traders and hospitality venues this festive period in greater numbers than before.
“Whilst the weather clearly influences footfall, we are encouraged that numbers were up by a third and also by the continuing reduction in shop vacancies. We therefore see this as a barometer of a healthy sector.”
Karl and Lizzie from Wink in Le Pollet were pleased with the two nights, commenting: “The evening trade has been great and it’s fantastic to see multi-generations enjoying the festivities together in Town.”
The competition run by the GRG comprised a number of prizes won by shoppers, who qualified by spending a minimum of £25 at participating retailers. Their entries were placed in a draw and the seven winners have been contacted.
There are two more shopping evenings this evening and on 21 December when retailers will stay open until 9pm. In Town, a range of entertainment adds to the festive spirit with outdoor stalls offering hot drinks, mulled wine, chestnuts and doughnuts, along with treats and sweets and local charity stalls.
Ms Le Page added: “We are very grateful to the Petit Train and to CT Plus for putting on services specifically to support our community and they too are pleased with the uptake compared with previous years.”
