Ask the Business Coach: What do you do if a team member won’t share their ‘why’?

Channel Eye has joined forces with Royston Guest, leading Business Growth Coach and CEO/Founder of Pathways Global, in our series, ‘Ask the Business Coach’.

When asked WHAT they do, most people can speak about it at length. They might have a quick answer and, when pressed, will give you tons of details about their role’s logical, technical, and procedural aspects. You are probably the same. We don’t have any difficulty at all explaining our WHAT.

When you can answer not just WHAT you do but elaborate on WHY you do it, it will change how you make decisions and the value you place on things.

Business Growth Pathways logoThree key takeaways

  1. Find out why they’re not happy to share their why!
  2. Focus on their professional why. Why do they come to work every day?
  3. To get to the root cause of understanding their why, you’ll have to ask many
    why questions.

Episode timestamps

  • [1.52] The starting point is to understand why the individual is unhappy to share their why with you. Could it be because you haven’t explained clearly why it is essential to understand this? Explaining that it will help you know what motivates them and sets them up for success could help them open up to you.
  • [2.55] Accept some individuals who may be private and don’t want to talk about personal goals with you. If that is the case, focus on their professional why rather than their personal why. Ask questions – why do they come to work every day? Why do they work in business XYZ? Why do they do the role they do?
  • [4.20] Understanding what makes your people tick – what motivates them is critically important. Central to this is finding out and understanding their why.
