Channel Eye has joined forces with Royston Guest, leading Business Growth Coach and CEO/Founder of Pathways Global, in our column, ‘Ask the Business Coach’.

It’s a VUCA world full of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. The business landscape in which we compete today is volatile, increasingly competitive and, certainly over the long term, unpredictable. It may seem a hostile terrain for anyone wishing to start or build a business, as many shifting variables exist.

Globalisation and technology have turned us into the ‘always on’ consumer, searching without boundaries, looking for immediacy to our challenges. The current pace of change drives a never-ending surge of innovation and distractions.

Business Growth Pathways logoThree key takeaways

  1. Stop trying to be everything to everyone.
  2. Less is more.
  3. Don’t succumb to the shiny object syndrome.

Episode timestamps

  • [1.13] There is a selection of macro environment challenges that we are all facing in our businesses today; the cost-of-living crisis, the impact of Brexit and the pandemic, changing consumer demands, technological advances – the list goes on.
  • [2.34] The most significant challenge when running your business is not trying to be everything to everyone because you’ll end up being nothing to anyone. Less is more.
  • [4.13] We are our own worst enemies as we spread ourselves too thinly because we are in a continual state of distraction brought on by an ongoing belief that there is something new worth pursuing. This is often referred to as the shiny object syndrome.
