The de Putron Challenge inter-island final reached its exciting conclusion last Tuesday, with Elizabeth College Junior School winning their Year Six final against St Mary’s Primary School and Les Beaucamps High School running out winners against Victoria College in the Year Eight match up.
The de Putron Challenge puts to the test the brightest young minds in Guernsey and Jersey. The Challenge brings together Year Six and Year Eight pupils to test their general knowledge, maths and creative thinking skills in two initial quiz competitions – one on each island. The winning schools then came together to go head-to-head in a nail-biting finish at the inter-island final yesterday in Jersey.
This year, the Guernsey schools travelled over to Jersey to compete against their Jersey counterparts. The final was held at Jersey Museum, hosted by quizmaster Jenny Mullin from BBC Jersey.

In the Year Six final, both teams started strongly, with a great performance across the first four rounds leaving only a two-point difference. Elizabeth College Junior School then took a 3-point lead during the literature round and with St Mary’s Primary School remaining hot on their heels, they finally claimed their victory with their snappy science answers, winning with 27 points to St Mary’s 19.
Later in the day, Les Beaucamps High School and Victoria College went head-to-head in the Year 8 final. In contrast to the earlier final, the scores were neck and neck throughout. It was only during the history round that Les Beaucamps High School took the lead by 1 point, then managed to hold onto their advantage until they were crowned champions with 27 points. Victoria College was the runner-up with an amazing 25 points.
Hayley de Putron, a Trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation and founder of the de Putron Challenge, said: “Congratulations to Elizabeth College Junior School and Les Beaucamps High School for winning the inter-island final in their respective year groups. All four teams that competed today performed to an extraordinarily high standard, and they should all be very proud of themselves. Thank you to everyone who was involved in another terrific de Putron Challenge.”
