East Midlands Airport is an ideal gateway for many attractions across central England, with great transport links. The region is steeped in art, history and culture, and boasts areas of outstanding natural beauty, not to mention some the UK’s most exciting theme parks, if thrills are your thing.
It has been announced that Flybe’s Channel Islands-based franchise partner, Blue Islands, will take over services between the Channel Islands and East Midlands, and with Aurigny also operating regular flights from Guernsey, it’s never been easier for islanders to visit the region. But what exactly does the East Midlands have to offer?
Here’s our pick of six of the region’s best destinations:
Peak District National Park
Ramble, cycle or horse ride your way through the Peak District National Park, a 555-sq-mile wilderness covering parts of Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Staffordshire, and Cheshire. This place is a heaven for nature lovers, who can keep their eyes peeled for mountain hares and delicate wildflowers. The best way to explore is on foot or by bike, and you can even sleep under the stars at designated campsites.
Alton Towers
Based in Staffordshire, Alton Towers is the UK’s biggest theme park. An absolute must for thrill-seekers, with its high-octane rides, the park also has CBeebies Land to keep the little ones entertained, making it a fantastic destination for families.
Donington Park
Located near Castle Donington in Leicestershire, Donington Park is one of the most internationally renowned and historically significant circuits in the world. Home of the Superbike World Championship, petrolheads can buy season passes, enjoy track days and even buy driving experiences.
The historic city of Lincoln
An ideal destination for a short break, Lincoln combines rich history with contemporary culture. Wander its quaint streets, admire its stunning architecture, visit the world famous cathedral and enjoy a vibrant arts and culinary scene.
Chatsworth House
The imposing stately home of Chatsworth, residence of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, has over 30 rooms to explore, from the magnificent Painted Hall, to the family-used chapel, regal State Rooms and beautiful Sculpture Gallery. Chatsworth also houses the Devonshire Collection, one of Europe’s most significant art collections. For kids, there’s a farmyard and adventure playground, and cafe.
The Great Central Railway
As the UK’s only double track, main line heritage railway, it’s the only place in the world where full size steam engines can be seen passing each other. For an experience to remember, take a ride in the First Class Restaurant Car, which provides a five-course meal while travelling between Loughborough and Leicester.
